  1. A perch block is shaped like a step. It is a box 10 cm long, 4 cm wide and 7 cm tall, with a smaller box 2 cm long, 4 cm wide and 4 cm tall cut out of one top corner. What is the volume of the perch block in cubic centimeters?

Hint for a grown-up: What would the volume be if nothing were cut away?

  2. A bar-tailed godwit can fly for days without stopping. One godwit flew nonstop for 4 days and 12 hours. How many hours is that in all? (1 day = 24 hours)

Hint for a grown-up: How many hours are in one day? And in 4 days?

  3. Kizupi made a line plot of how much seed each bird feeder used in one day. There are 6 X’s at 1/4 cup, 2 at 1/2 cup, 5 at 3/4 cup and 4 at 1 cup. Each X is one feeder. How many cups of seed did the feeders at 3/4 cup use altogether?

Hint for a grown-up: Each X at that mark is one feeder that used 3/4 cup. How many quarter cups is that for one feeder?

  4. A Canada goose weighs 14 pounds. How many ounces is that? (1 pound = 16 ounces)

Hint for a grown-up: Every pound is 16 ounces. How many pounds does the goose weigh?

  5. A box for bike parts is 7 cm long, 7 cm wide and 4 cm tall. How many centimeter cubes fill it?

Hint for a grown-up: How many cubes fit in the bottom layer?

  6. A flock of geese takes off from the lake at 6:25 in the morning. It lands in a field at 7:15 the same morning. For how many minutes did the flock fly?

Hint for a grown-up: How many minutes is it from 6:25 to the next full hour?

  7. Kofi builds a model bird feeder from two wooden boxes glued together. One box is 4 cm long, 4 cm wide and 4 cm tall. The other is 4 cm long, 8 cm wide and 2 cm tall. What is the volume of the whole feeder in cubic centimeters?

Hint for a grown-up: What is the volume of the first box on its own?

  8. An Arctic tern flew 4.5 km before it rested on a boat. How many meters did it fly? (1 km = 1000 m)

Hint for a grown-up: Meters are much smaller than kilometers. Will the number of meters be bigger or smaller than 4.5?
