Grade 6 geometry word problems
Name: ____________________The skate park’s round bowl is 8 m across, through its center. A metal edge runs all the way around its rim. How long is the edge? Use 3.14 for π.
Hint for a grown-up: The distance around a circle is a little more than 3 times its diameter. What number do we use for π?
A science fair display box is 2 cm by 5 cm by 2 cm. How many square centimeters of paper cover its whole surface?
Hint for a grown-up: How many faces does a box have? Which ones match?
Anna designs a round sticker for the skate park opening. It is 20 cm across. What is its area, in square cm? Use 3.14 for π.
Hint for a grown-up: The area formula needs the radius. How long is the radius here?
The funbox is a ramp with a flat top. Its side is a trapezoid: the bottom edge is 5 m, the flat top is 4 m, and it is 1 m tall. What is the area of one side, in square meters?
Hint for a grown-up: The top and the bottom are different lengths. What length is halfway between them?
Kizupi makes a model wedge ramp from card. Its two ends are right triangles with sides of 3 cm, 4 cm and 5 cm. The ramp is 13 cm long. How many square cm of card cover all five faces?
Hint for a grown-up: The net has two triangles and three rectangles. How long is each rectangle?
The skate plaza is a rectangle 10 m by 7 m. A square fountain, 3 m on each side, sits in the middle. How many square meters of the plaza are left to skate on?
Hint for a grown-up: What is the area of the whole plaza? What is the area of the fountain?
The skate park’s new ramp has a side panel shaped like a right triangle. The panel is 3 m along the ground and 1 m tall. What is the area of one side panel, in square meters?
Hint for a grown-up: The two sides that meet at the square corner are the base and the height. How long is each one?
Kizupi builds a model of a skate box from tiny cubes. Each tiny cube has edges of 1/2 cm. The model is 3 tiny cubes long, 6 wide and 3 tall. What is its volume, in cubic cm?
Hint for a grown-up: What is the volume of one tiny cube, 1/2 × 1/2 × 1/2?
Answer key
- 25.12 C = π × d = 3.14 × 8 = 25.12
- 48 2 × (2×5 + 2×2 + 5×2) = 48
- 314 r = 20 ÷ 2 = 10, A = 3.14 × 10 × 10 = 314
- 4.5 (5 + 4) × 1 ÷ 2 = 4.5
- 168 2 × (3 × 4 ÷ 2) + (3 + 4 + 5) × 13 = 168
- 61 10 × 7 − 3 × 3 = 61
- 1.5 3 × 1 ÷ 2 = 1.5
- 6 3/4 54 × 1/8 = 6 3/4

What these geometry problems cover
Each sheet draws 8 problems from 14 Grade 6 geometry word problems in Kizupi’s published lessons, a different skill for each where it can. Only problems that work on paper are used.
Surface area and volume · Area of triangles · Area of trapezoids · Area of composite shapes · Volume with fraction edges · Nets and surface area · Circumference · Area of circles
Where this fits in 6th grade
The Common Core math standards say Grade 6 time should go to these areas [1]:
- Ratios and rates
- Dividing fractions, and negative numbers
- Writing and using expressions and equations
- Statistical thinking

Questions parents ask
What geometry word problems do 6th graders do?
The sheets here draw from 8 Grade 6 skills: Surface area and volume, Area of triangles, Area of trapezoids, Area of composite shapes, Volume with fraction edges, Nets and surface area, Circumference, Area of circles.
Is the worksheet free?
Yes. No account and no email. Press New sheet for another set of the same topic, and print as many as you like.
Are the answers right?
Every answer is computed with exact arithmetic by the same engine that checks children’s answers in Kizupi, not typed in by hand.
What if geometry word problems are too hard?
Read the problem aloud together and ask what the story is about before any numbers. Use the hint under each problem. If it is still hard, try the mixed Grade 5 sheet first.
