Name: ____________________
  1. Max scored 84, 98, 91 and 87 on four science quizzes. What is the mean score?

Hint for a grown-up: What is the total of all the scores?

  2. Kizupi’s histogram shows how many minutes students spent on homework. The bars show 9 students for 0–9 minutes, 4 for 10–19, 7 for 20–29, 9 for 30–39 and 1 for 40–49. How many students spent at least 30 minutes?

Hint for a grown-up: Which bars show 30 minutes or more?

  3. Kizupi’s survey counted the members of five school clubs. Chess has 18, art has 29, music has 18 and drama has 12. The mean club size is 20. How many members does the science club have?

Hint for a grown-up: If the mean of five clubs is 20, what must all five sizes add up to?

  4. Kizupi surveyed 40 students, and 8 of them said art is their favorite subject. The whole school has 480 students. Predict how many students in the whole school would choose art.

Hint for a grown-up: What fraction of the surveyed students chose art?

  5. Kizupi’s survey asked four students how many hours they spend outdoors each week. They said 38, 23, 40 and 31. The mean is 33. What is the mean absolute deviation (MAD)?

Hint for a grown-up: How far is each answer from 33?

  6. Three students in Kizupi’s survey walk to school. Their walks take 5, 15 and 16 minutes. The dots on the number line balance like a seesaw at their mean. Where is the balance point?

Hint for a grown-up: One dot is far out on the left, and two are on the right. Which side has more dots?

  7. Kizupi’s survey asked seven students how many minutes they took to get ready this morning. They said 37, 26, 42, 32, 27, 38 and 36. Find the quartiles the usual way: leave out the median, then find the middle of each half. What is the interquartile range (IQR)?

Hint for a grown-up: The IQR is the upper quartile minus the lower quartile. What must we do before we find any quartile?

  8. Five bean plants at the science fair grew 31, 19, 35, 30 and 25 cm. What is the median height?

Hint for a grown-up: The median is the middle value. What must we do before we look for the middle?
