Grade 4 word problems

Name: ____________________
  1. The crew wants to set out 12 chairs in a rectangle, with the same number of chairs in every row. One long row counts as a rectangle too, but turning a rectangle around does not make a new one. How many different rectangles can the crew make?

Hint for a grown-up: Which pairs of numbers multiply to make 12?

  2. A garden bed is shaped like an L. It is a rectangle, 10 m by 9 m, with a corner cut out that is 5 m by 3 m. What is the area of the garden bed?

Hint for a grown-up: Can we find the area of the big rectangle first?

  3. Kizupi cuts a paper sail for a box kite. The sail has four square corners. It is 12 cm wide and 12 cm tall. How many lines of symmetry does the sail have?

Hint for a grown-up: A line of symmetry is a fold where the two halves match exactly. Which folds could work?

  4. Mia, Bo and Tom play a sharing game with marbles. First Mia gives Bo as many marbles as Bo already has. Then Bo gives Tom as many marbles as Tom already has. Then Tom gives Mia as many marbles as Mia already has. Now each of them has 16 marbles. How many marbles did Mia have at the start?

Hint for a grown-up: Tom’s gift doubled Mia’s marbles. How many did Mia have just before it?

  5. Kizupi has 20 m of rope to mark out a rectangular campsite. The sides must be whole meters, and all the rope is used. What is the largest area the campsite can have, in square meters?

Hint for a grown-up: What do the length and the width add up to?

  6. Aisha has 12 coins. Some are 5-cent coins and the rest are 10-cent coins. They are worth 105 cents in all. How many 10-cent coins does Aisha have?

Hint for a grown-up: What if every coin were a 5-cent coin? How much would that be?

  7. Kizupi builds 4 kites. On each kite, the two sticks cross each other and are perpendicular. How many right angles are there at all the crossings together?

Hint for a grown-up: When two perpendicular sticks cross, how many corners do they make around the crossing?

  8. The small stand has 254 seats. The big stand has 7 times as many seats. How many seats does the big stand have?

Hint for a grown-up: What does “7 times as many” mean?

What 4th grade math is about

The Common Core math standards say Grade 4 time should go to these areas [1]:

  • Multiplying multi-digit numbers and dividing into multi-digit numbers
  • Equivalent fractions, adding and subtracting like fractions, and a fraction times a whole number
  • Sorting shapes by parallel sides, right angles and symmetry

Word problems are where those skills meet a story. Being able to compute is not the same as knowing which computation a story needs, which is why each problem here comes with a question to ask, not the answer.

The 60 skills on these sheets

Each sheet draws 8 problems from 94 Grade 4 word problems in Kizupi’s published lessons, a different skill for each where it can. Only problems that work on paper are used: nothing that needs a picture to count or a clock to read.

Questions parents ask

What kind of word problems do 4th graders do?

The Common Core centers Grade 4 on multiplying multi-digit numbers and dividing into multi-digit numbers; equivalent fractions, adding and subtracting like fractions, and a fraction times a whole number; sorting shapes by parallel sides, right angles and symmetry. The sheets here mix 60 skills from that year.

Is the 4th grade worksheet free?

Yes. No account and no email. Print as many sheets as you like.

Are the answers right?

Every answer is computed with exact arithmetic by the same engine that checks children’s answers in Kizupi, not typed in by hand.

My child finds 4th grade word problems hard. What helps?

Read the problem aloud together and ask what the story is about before any numbers. Use the hint under each problem, then ask “how do you know?” If it is still hard, try a Grade 3 sheet first.
